Coffee With a Cop
Local law enforcement provided prevention information to a steady stream of customers at the first in a series of Coffee with a Cop at the Valparaiso restaurant March 23, 2022. Officers were available to answer community concerns and distribute prevention, treatment and recovery resources.
Environmental scan 2021
The Porter County Substance Abuse Council conducted an environmental scan focusing on alcohol messaging, alcohol use and access, and tobacco use. Environmental scanning is a process involving the observation (data collection) of social mechanisms that influence a behavior—in this case alcohol and tobacco consumption—and the interpretation (data analysis) of the information to better understand a behavioral trend.
The scan was conducted concurrent with the Chicagoland Popcorn Festival and Parade held on Saturday September 11, 2021, from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. by PCSAC’s coalitions –LCC, Valparaiso, Chesterton, and Portage. Seven volunteers collected 61 alcohol and 26 tobacco impressions.

Porter County Officers Increase OWI Detection Skills
The Council’s Drunk Driving Task Force hosted a 2 day “Wet Lab” at the MAAC Training Center on June 8th & 9th for Porter County Law Enforcement to gain practical experience by interacting with 30 inebriated volunteers. Officers from the area improved their skills performing field sobriety and breath tests to determine blood alcohol levels and the level of intoxication to warrant an OWI arrest.
Alcohol-Related Crash Fatalities:
- ·26% of alcohol related crashes are on weekends
- 3x move likely at night
- Males account for 80% of all alcohol-impaired traffic fatalities
