The DEA National Rx TBD occurs twice a year. 22,216 pounds of medications were collected in Indiana at the April 2021 TBD. Porter County youth shared that they used someone else's prescription medication, for the first time, between the age of 11 and 15 (INYS, 2018). Prevention starts with cleaning out your cabinets.
The Porter County Substance Abuse Council conducted an environmental scan focusing on alcohol messaging, alcohol use and access, and tobacco use. Environmental scanning is a process involving the observation (data collection) of social mechanisms that influence a behavior—in this case alcohol and tobacco consumption—and the interpretation (data analysis) of the information to better understand a behavioral trend.
The scan was conducted concurrent with the Chicagoland Popcorn Festival and Parade held on Saturday September 11, 2021, from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. by PCSAC’s coalitions –LCC, Valparaiso, Chesterton, and Portage. Seven volunteers collected 61 alcohol and 26 tobacco impressions.
